Born in 1775, Jean Austen grew up in a small village in Hampshire, where her family had high social status but were not well off.

Before Austen, 'sentimental novels' and 'Gothic novels' filled the English literary circle. Novel was her chosen weapon in the struggle to reform humanity, which significantly promotes the entrance of English literature to the era of realistic fiction.

Pride and Prejudice, displays a gentle but witty satire of marriage and gentry.

    ⚛ 2005 Elizabeth ⚛

It is said that Jane Austen began to write Pride and Prejudice when she companioned the only lover of her entire life, Tom Lefroy, back to his hometown to seek his uncle's consent to their marriage.

After long-term planning and long distance ride, she was exhausted and hesitated. Little earlier, young Austen turned down a proposal given by a young man she didn't love. He would inherit a large fortune, which shall be suitable for everyone.

In the end, Lefroy's uncle refused to bless their marriage, at that time, she wrote Pride and Prejudice perhaps to comfort herself that affection can bring happy endings which wealth can not.

    ⚛ 95 TV series ⚛

Fitzwilliam Darcy, a character based on the Duke of Derbyshire, and Elizabeth, who born in an ordinary family, are the ones who lead the whole novel.

Their bad first impression, Darcy's arrogance, as well as Elizabeth's preconception are the main conflicts of the book.

And in the happy marriage of Eliza and Darcy, Jane Austen is showing one of the best characteristics that a woman can have: an unconventional free will.

In this book, eight marriages contrast each other to reveal Jean Austen's opinions and thoughts on the subject of marriage in the eighteenth century.

She suggests that love is an important factor to a successful marriage. Therefore, Austen implies her theme through Jane Bennet's words,' Do anything rather than marry without affection.'

    Free

Couple can educate each other made Mr. and Mrs. Darcy's marriage become the most successful one among the eight marriages in Pride and Prejudice.

Darcy starts off feeling superior because he has more money and higher status, then at a key moment, Elizabeth condemns his arrogance and pride to his face.

It sounds offensive but later he admits "Your reproof so well applied I shall never forget. You taught me a lesson, hard indeed at first, but most advantageous. By you I was properly humbled."

They suit each other because by her ease and liveliness, his mind might have been softened, his manners improved, and from his judgment, information and knowledge of the world, she must have received benefit of greater importance.

They balance each other out. We tend to think of love as liking someone for whom they are already, total acceptance.

But Austen is saying that the right person has got to be able to help us overcome our failing, and become more mature, honest and kind. It illustrates a basic truth: marriage depends on maturity and education.

Naturally, Jane Austen believes that love at first sight is not a necessary option for a successful marriage. Perhaps that's why the book was first named as 'First Impression' to stress that first impressions are not irrevocable when the novel was still in form of letters.

Two hundred years ago, Jane Austen first spoke for women made me attracted by this extraordinary lady. It was Pride and Prejudice, that connected me with the writer, and the vivid characters in it lead me to the eighteenth century as if I were talking to Jane Austen herself.

Everyone is imperfect. Only by adhering to our own way and not being controlled by others, can we walk out of our own unique path.
