National cultures
Values conflicts
Six dimensions of national cultures
dimension/ daɪ'menʃən/: a part of something, or a aspect of something, or a way of something , a cube has 3D (length, width and height)
1. Power distance
How much a society values hierarchy, hierarchy in the society between relationships.
(hierarchy /ˈhaɪəˌrɑːkɪ/ A hierarchy is a system of organizing people into different ranks or levels of importance, for example in society or in a company. 等级制度)
For example: in China, there is high power distance, You’re nothing, but your boss is everything 😂😂😂,while in Canada, there is less power distance , the distance between employers and employees is not as much. It happens because societies have certain preference for things , like how much power there is in relationships
2. Individualism& collectivism
Individualism /ɪndɪ’vɪdʒuə͵lɪzəm/is the belief that people should have the greatest possible personal freedom. 个人主义 you are responsible for yourself only
I am more important
collectivism /kəˈlɛktɪˌvɪzəm/ a political system in which all businesses, farms etc are owned by the government 集体主义
You are responsible for society
Society is more important(it’s all about family, society, everything is as a group, it’s not about just one person)
3. Masculinity& Femininity
It’s nothing with man and woman, it has to do with certain character traits, that always associated with one of genders.
masculinity /ˌmæskjʊˈlɪnɪtɪ/ A man's masculinity is the fact that he is a man. 男性化 (competitive, success, need to be best ) for example: In some Asian countries, kids always get A+, they are very driven for success.
femininity /ˌfɛmɪˈnɪnɪtɪ/ A woman’s femininity is the fact that she is a woman. 女性化 (cooperative,Quality of life ,enjoy work)
