I was born in Alexandria in 1873.
A Greek by origin,an optimist and avid admirer of my homeland,
a country with a long turbulent past,
a country that is never ceased to fight for its survival.

And if my ancestors defined themselves by their quest for immortality,
I'd follow their example by dedicating my life to the safeguarding of our heritage.
I founded The Benaki Museum,
where works sealed with a blessing of the human spirit would be committed to posterity.

It was others who wrote these words.
Who could ever talk this way about oneself.
I dare say I have never been alone.
My family inspired in me the principles of belonging ,of sharing.
Sharing became my life's primordial mission.
I collected and exhibited rare treasures of hellenic in world art in order to save them from oblivion.

In the house ,which our father had bequeathed to us in Athens,
and which together with my siblings,we donated to the Greek state.
The house in which my heart lies immured today.
